Flat White has quickly become a beloved favourite. It’s not another Cappuccino or Latte, even though it’s also made with espresso or ristretto and milk. But what is a Flat White coffee? The composition of the Flat White makes the difference in taste. The milk in a Flat White coffee is silky smooth and therefore mixes really well with the ristretto.
Usually the Latte coffee pod, the Cappuccino and the Flat White are seen as the same coffee. This is mainly because all 3 coffees use the same ingredients. The way the coffees are made is different, that’s the reason why they all have a different taste. We’ll explain the difference between a Latte vs Cappuccino vs Flat White.
Did you know that the Flat White coffee originates from New Zealand or Australia? And, did you know a Flat White is called ‘Flat’, because of how the milk blends with the coffee? There is just a super thin layer of steamed milk making the coffee look white, hence the name ‘Flat White’. TASSIMO offers a lot of different kinds of coffee to enjoy at home and we’re happy to explain the differences between Flat White and Latte. We’ll also explain the difference between a Flat White and a Cappuccino.
For many, a Flat White is the little sister of a Latte. However, a Flat White coffee is prepared differently. The milk is more velvety and less foamy, which leads to a more balanced combination of milk and coffee.
When drinking a Latte, you’ll taste a lot of milk, whereas a Flat White offers a more intense coffee flavour. Latte, also called a Caffè Latte, is often served in a glass and the Flat White in a ceramic cup. Most of the time a Latte has one shot of espresso, sometimes two shots, while the Flat White coffee always has two shots of espresso. That is also the reason why both look like the same drink but the flavour is different between the Flat White and the Latte. The ingredients of both drinks are similar, but they’re really not the same drink.

How do you make your own Latte?
If you want to make a Latte at home the only things you need are espresso and frothed milk. You have to start by putting the espresso in a cup. After that, just pour the liquid steamed milk into the cup with the espresso. It can help if you hold back the foam with a spoon while you pour the milk into the cup. Did it work out? Now you can add the foam, try putting about 1 cm foam on top.
A Flat White and a Cappuccino look very similar. Oftentimes you’ll find both these popular, espresso-based drinks served in a ceramic cup. The biggest difference between a Flat White and a Cappuccino is the composition of these coffees. For a Cappuccino, its three equal parts: espresso, steamed milk and thick milk froth. For a Flat White, you’ll need a double ristretto or espresso and milk foam, (foamed for a shorter time so it remains liquid and pours smoothly). One of the nicknames of Flat White is ‘wet cappuccino’, as the microfoamed milk permeates the coffee, whereas a Cappuccino has a distinct froth layer.
