What is decaffeinated coffee?

What is DECAF?

How much caffeine is in decaffeinated coffee?

Decaf coffee contains a very small amount of caffeine (max 0.1 % in roasted coffee). A cup of decaffeinated coffee could contain about 2-7 milligrams of caffeine on average, this amount depends on the respective brewing method, intensity, cup size and type of coffee. In comparison, the amount of caffeine in regular coffee is between 60 and 135 milligrams per 125 millilitres. Here again, the type of coffee and brewing method is decisive. According to European legislation, decaffeinated coffee must contain 0.1 percent or less caffeine if it is roasted coffee. Soluble coffee may contain a maximum of 0.3 percent caffeine.

How are coffee beans decaffeinated?

Coffee beans can be decaffeinated using various methods. The process of decaffeination takes place before the coffee is roasted. In all stages of the process, the green coffee bean is safely deprived of its caffeine, while preserving the natural taste and aroma of the coffee as much as possible. A number of standard procedures can involve:

  • Swelling the green coffee beans with water or steam to prepare them for caffeine extraction
  • The extraction of caffeine from the beans is oftentimes done with a solvent. This process can be repeated until very little caffeine is left.
  • Residual solvent is removed by steaming the coffee beans again.
  • Drying the decaffeinated beans, so they are ready for the next process: roasting.

Is decaffeinated coffee less healthy than regular coffee?

Decaffeinated coffee is chosen for various reasons. Some consumers sleep better or feel generally better after limiting their caffeine consumption. Decaffeinated varieties are a suitable choice for those who love the aroma of coffee, but at the same time do not wish to experience the mild stimulant effects of caffeine. The decaffeination process has been thoroughly tested and subjected to strict regulations.
